“The High Cost of Social Media: Real Stories. Real Solutions.” -Youth4Youth iSummit 2021

Social media is killing kids, in addition to harming youth mental and physical health

The recent Wall Street Journal report on the Facebook Files uncovered that Facebook knew Instagram was harmful to teens and hid the research. This is just one more report, in a stack of evidence, that social media algorithms and content is hurting youth.

This panel consists of adult allies who want to add their research and personal stories to this very important conversation.

This session for the international 2021 Youth 4 Youth iSummit by LookUp.Live is moderated by Jean Rogers, director of the Children’s Screen Time Action Network. Dr. Richard Freed, psychologist, author of Wired Child, and expert on persuasive design, leads with the science of real-world connections for young people when relationships with family and educators are strong. The parent panel (parent activists Kristen Bride, Joann Bogard, Judy Rogg and Ian Russell) discusses how social media undermined that science for their children who suffered tragic results. Lisa Honold, director of the Center for Online Safety, offers strategies to mitigate the risks online by strengthening relationships with youth and protecting their safety.

Watch time: 45 minutes.
